Free agent shortstop Carlos Correa hired super-agent Scott Boras in pursuit of a massive contract.
Correa is considered the cream of the crop in the free agent pool, but transactions are frozen as Major League Baseball and its players are in the sixth week of a labor-related lockout.
He's reportedly seeking a deal worth at least $300 million.
The 27-year-old Correa had interest from multiple teams prior to the stoppage in December but the Texas Rangers opted to sign former Dodgers shortstop Corey Seager to a $325 million contract. That deal was negotiated by Boras, who also scored deals for free agents Max Scherzer (New York Mets) and Marcus Semien (Texas Rangers).
Correa won the Gold Glove at shortstop and finished fifth in American League MVP voting last season.
The No. 1 overall pick in the 2012 draft by Houston, Correa was AL Rookie of the Year in 2015 and was part of six playoff teams with the Astros. He's a career .277 hitter with 133 home runs and a 34.1 wins above replacement. Seager, 27, has a 21.3 WAR with a .297 career batting average.
William Morris Endeavor formerly represented Correa. Parent company Endeavor purchased nine minor league baseball teams before the lockout and has been advised by the MLBPA that agent regulations strictly prohibit ownership of minor league teams.
Among other top free agents are Braves first baseman Freddie Freeman, Rockies shortstop Trevor Story and Giants outfielder Kris Bryant.
