Brayden Point's first-period goal held up as the game-winner, and goaltender Andrei Vasilevskiy netted the shutout as the Tampa Bay Lightning captured the Stanley Cup championship with a 2-0 victory over the Dallas Stars on Monday night in Edmonton.
The Lightning won the best-of-seven Stanley Cup Final in six games to earn the second crown in franchise history. Tampa Bay's other title came in 2004.
Thanks to a strong performance from the Lightning defense, Vasilevskiy needed to make only 22 saves for his first career playoff shutout.
Point, an offensive dynamo for the Lightning, opened the scoring past the midway point of the first period. He gained the puck off the rush, and after his first shot was stopped, he controlled the rebound and hit the mark for a power-play goal 12:23 into the first period.
The goal was Point's 14th of the Stanley Cup playoffs -- and fifth in the Stanley Cup Final -- and notably the Lightning have won every game in which he lit the lamp. He led all NHL players in goals during the 2020 postseason, edging Dallas' Joe Pavelski (13).
Blake Coleman doubled the Lightning's lead 7:01 into the second period. While catching the Stars on a line change after a turnover, Pat Maroon started a three-way passing play that ended when Coleman blasted a one-timer set up by Cedric Paquette.
The Stars managed only four shots on goal in each of the first two periods, a testament to the strong defensive play by the Lightning. Dallas finally managed to generate an attack during the third period, but Vasilevskiy stood tall in blocking all 14 shots that came his way.
He made huge saves on Tyler Seguin and Joel Kiviranta with less than five minutes remaining in regulation while the Stars had hope.
The Lightning made a couple of changes. Not only did they dress defenseman Zach Bogosian instead of Jan Rutta, but Carter Verhaeghe also was scratched and Alexander Volkov made his playoff debut.
Anton Khudobin stopped 27 shots for the Stars.
