Texas tornado kills many and renders hundreds homeless

GRANBURY, Texas - Many people were reported dead or missing, and scores injured after tornadoes ripped through an area of North Central Texas forcing hundreds out of their flattened homes by high velocity winds of up to 325 km per hour.

The worst hit is the Rancho Brazos subdivision that houses 110 homes near Granbury, southwest of the Dallas-Fort Worth area Wednesday night.

Hood County Sheriff Roger Deeds, a wide swath of mobile homes and single-family homes, were leveled.

"Most of the neighborhood is heavily damaged to destroyed," he said. "Very little is untouched."

The National Weather Service said the preliminary storm estimate for the tornado in Granbury carried wind speeds of up to 325 kmph.

It said 10 tornadoes raked North Texas in a violent system, including the one in Granbury. Other tornadoes damaged nearby Cleburne and Millsap.

Deeds said some of those killed "were found in houses, some were found around houses".

"There was a report that two of these people that they found were not even near their homes. So we're going to have to search the area out there."

He said that 14 people were still unaccounted for as it was not clear if they are missing or were away from the area when the tornado hit." ...
